Cold Weather Shelter
About CWS
The Cold Weather Shelter, run by the Whittier Area Interfaith Council, has been running for about 20 years. The Shelter screens homeless applicants and accepts approximately 20 people to be housed and fed at different churches from the middle of November until the middle of March. All 20 people are housed together at different churches, one week at a time. They come onto our campus in the evening and are checked in by a Screening Supervisor. Dinner is served at 7:00 pm, with time to relax afterward (this is a good time to chat, play games, work on a puzzle, and get to know our guests). Lights out is at 9:00 pm. Wake up is at 5:00 am, breakfast is served at 6:00 am, with guests leaving campus at 7:00 am.
Why We Participate
Reaching out and giving to others a cup of cold water in Jesus’ name is part of being “a fully redemptively-engaged disciple.” This is why we participate in CWS. We want to make a difference in the lives of those in our community who need someone to help them get to the next level. A place to sleep and some food to eat may not seem like a lot for a two-week period. But we are committed to taking the light of the gospel to Whittier, La Mirada and La Habra and making them more just and caring communities for Christ and His kingdom through the practical love of Jesus.
